General Instructions
You will be subjected to a metal
detector, and instructed to take off your shoes and outerwear. These guidelines
will assist you in dressing appropriately. Anyone who is not dressed
appropriately will not be allowed inside the facility.
All students should wear
slacks only. No jewelry (rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces).
You may leave purses and
wallets in the van, but bring only a picture ID inside the facility (preferably
a driver's license or a passport).
Empty your pockets before
you leave the van. Anything you bring into the facility that is considered
contraband --pocketknife, gum, chapstick may be seized.
Anyone without a signed picture
ID will not be allowed inside the facility.
I highly recommend that you
wear sweats or other loose clothing. Avoid wearing clothes that are in
poor taste ("Property of Alcatraz" t-shirts, for example), or that draw
attention to the female anatomy.

Erie County
Correctional Facility
Mixed Classification Jail
Date TBA
Erie County Correctional
Facility (ECCF) is an 11 year old, "new generation" jail. Students should
follow the regular dress and conduct protocol for visiting correctional
facilities.
Visiting the ECCF gives students
a unique opportunity to observe how the authority of the State (as custodian
of persons under its criminal law enforcement jurisdiction) is shared among
governmental units. ECCF is a county jail, yet it does not operate under
the traditional supervision of the Sheriff's Dept. Instead, the Superintendent
reports directly to the Deputy County Executive. ECCF staff are correctional
officers, rather than police officers. Since the downtown Erie County Holding
Center is under court order to reduce overcrowding and make physical improvements
to its building, ECCF takes overflow from the Holding Center. Hence, a
section of ECCF is staffed by law enforcement officers in black uniforms,
while other areas are staffed by correctional officers in brown uniforms.
Departure: Vans will
be parked in the Flint Loop (where the flagpoles are) at 8:15am. Vans will
depart no later than 8:30am, and arrive at ECCF at 9:00am.
Return: The tour is
expected to last approximately 2 hours. We should depart the facility at
approximately 11:00am, and be back on campus by 11:30am.

are left behind)
