The Phyllis G. Smith Scholarship Application

The Phyllis G. Smith Scholarship, totaling $45,000 over three academic years, shall be awarded to a member of the University at Buffalo School of Law J.D. Class of 2021.

David Smith ’78, a long-time and loyal friend of the School of Law, is the Executive Chairman of the Board of National Fuel Gas Company, and member of the School of Law’s Dean’s Advisory Council and Campaign Steering Committee.  

The Phyllis G. Smith Scholarship is funded by a charitable gift from David Smith and his wife, Lucy, made in memory of Smith’s mother, Phyllis.  

Primary criteria for The Phyllis G. Smith Scholarship include:

  1. Demonstrated financial need
  2. Strong possibility of a career as an attorney or a principal in the business world

Secondary consideration will be given to candidates who meet the following criteria:

  1. Have one or more children to support
  2. Have overcome major obstacles in life
  3. Demonstrate outstanding accomplishments
  4. Being from a race, background, or culture that is underrepresented in the legal profession
