The Baldy Center provides grants for faculty research projects, funds conferences and workshops, and helps to cosponsor events organized by other UB departments or organizations. Details on guidelines, application forms and deadlines are found in this section. (Details on funding for students can be found under Student Information.)

Research Grants

The Baldy Center supports individual or joint research projects conducted by UB faculty on the interdisciplinary study of law and legal institutions and/or law and social policy. All applicants must be members of the University at Buffalo faculty (not adjunct faculty). Projects must be conceived and designed by UB faculty members who expect to spend significant time on the research, analysis, and writing. Funds may be used for field work, archival research, data collection, research assistance to complete publications, transcription, etc. Grants may not be used for curricula projects or conference travel. Examples of recently funded proposals may be examined in the Baldy Center.

Annual Research Grants

These grants have typically ranged between $600 and $6,000 (with an average of around $2,500). Modest unanticipated changes in project costs will be considered mid-year. Application deadline is December 15th for funding in the following fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

Small Research Grants

Small Research Grants for funds up to $1,000 to be spent within the current fiscal year. Small Research Grants may not be used to increase funding on an Annual Research Grant, nor may applicants receive more than one Small Research Grant for the same project within the same fiscal year. Application deadlines are June 15, September 15, and February 15.

Application and guidelines for both Annual and Small Research grants can be downloaded here.

The Baldy Center sponsors several conferences and workshops each year on different aspects of law and legal institutions and/or law and social policy. These may range in size from small-scale events, narrowly focused, with intensive discussion (workshops), to larger events with more participants and guest presentations (conferences).

Applicants for conference or workshop funding must be members of the University at Buffalo faculty (not adjuncts). Next funding period: July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011 -. Deadlines for submission to the Baldy Center: Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Download Guidelines and Application forms

Cosponsorship
