SUNY Buffalo Law School is pleased to host the Third Annual Empire State Legal Writing Conference, as well as an ALWD Scholars' Forum the day before the conference.
This year's conference features more than 20 presentations on a wide range of topics, with an especially strong range of presentations on classroom exercises. Topics include:
- Stages of Learning Assessment
- Writing Center Theory & Teaching Assistants
- Teaching Plagiarism and Proper Attribution
- Teaching Specialized Research Courses and "Advanced" Writing Courses
- Conducting a Learning-Centered, Student-Led Conference
- Legislative Advocacy exercises
- Working with Local Rules
- Teaching Continuity and Structure
- Writing to Avoid Audience Bias, and
- Exercises for Building Research Skills and Using Plain Language

ALWD Scholar's Forum
During the pre-conference ALWD Scholar's Forum, up to 12 participants will present their scholarship ideas or works in progress for discussion and critique by legal writing scholars. We strongly encourage interdisciplinary scholarship, and will try to match participants whose work is interdisciplinary with a SUNY Buffalo scholar in an appropriate field when possible. Participants must pre-registration and participation is limited to the first twelve registrants.

Main Conference * Saturday, June 23, 2012 * 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Optional Niagara Falls Trip * Sunday, June 24, 2012 * 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Fee
There is no charge to attend either the full conference or the pre-conference ALWD Scholars' Forum. (A fee will be charged for the optional Niagara Falls trip.)

Keynote Speaker
We're delighted to have Sarah Ricks as our keynote speaker. Sarah is a Clinical Professor of Law at Rutgers Law School in Camden, New Jersey. She will address the overlap between legal writing programs and ‘experiental' learning, such as hybrid clinical/writing courses, as well as collaboration between legal writing faculty and professors who teach in clinical, pro bono, and externship programs.
Registration
To register for the main conference, please complete and submit the online Conference Registration form by Monday, June 11, 2012.
To register for the ALWD Scholar's Forum, please complete and submit the online Forum Registration by Monday, June 4, 2012. Pre-registration is required and is limited to the first twelve registrants.
Optional Niagara Falls Trip
On Sunday after the conference, there will be an optional trip to Niagara Falls for those who are interested. You'll find more information on the Niagara Falls Trip page.
And while you're in Buffalo, you could also tour one of Frank Lloyd Wright's finest Prairie-style houses (the Darwin-Martin House), or see a play at the wonderful Shaw Theatre Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Conference Accommodations
We've arranged a conference rate at two hotels near the law school. You'll find more information on the Conference Accommodations page. Shuttle service will be provided to the law school both before and after the conference.
