On January 2, New York State Appellate Division Justice Gerald J. Whalen ’83 (left) administered the oath of office to Governor Andrew Cuomo (right).
Whalen was elected to state Supreme Court in 2005 in Erie County and in 2012 was appointed by Governor Cuomo to the Appellate Division-Fourth Department. Before his election he spent 21 years in private practice, most recently as a partner in the Buffalo office of the law firm Hiscock & Barclay.

He has spent time in Special Term on criminal cases and handled post-judgment matrimonial matters to broaden his experience as a jurist.
