How would you describe your experience?
Working at the Erie County District Attorney's Office changed how I see public service. I learned firsthand about the power and impact these roles have. Prosecutors can make sure punishment is fair and can help both sides of a case. Ideally, judges, defense attorneys, and prosecutors work together to make sure justice is served. Many people think prosecutors just want to close cases quickly and give out the toughest punishments, but I saw that isn't always true. Sometimes, defendants are also victims, often acting because of difficult circumstances. While prosecutors know that punishment is important to protect everyone's rights, I also saw real compassion in their work. Prosecutors can suggest treatment or other options to help prevent future offenses. The decisions they make affect not just the people in court, but their families too. I saw how important it is to find a balance so that real change can happen, even when the consequences are serious. Prosecutors work to make sure the law is fair and that everyone involved is treated with dignity and respect.
What impacted you the most?
Seeing cases in Buffalo City Court gave me real appreciation for the work done by the District Attorney's Office. They stand up for people who can't represent themselves and give a voice to those who need it most. This summer, I saw that every ADA I worked with understood the responsibility of their role and respected the authority they held. At first, I thought the prosecutor's office might not care about the struggles of everyday people facing charges. But I learned that these attorneys show real compassion to everyone involved. They know they sometimes serve as the last line of defense, making sure punishments are fair and effective for all. The office's diverse perspectives help make this possible. Looking at each case means understanding both the law and the needs of the community. The attorneys at the Erie County DA's Office take their jobs seriously, knowing their decisions affect everyone involved. Balancing justice with the needs of the community is what keeps our legal system grounded.
What would you like to share with our donors?
Thank you to the donors of the Honorable Dennis C. Vacco '78 Summer Fellowship. Your support made it possible for me to take on an unpaid public service internship this summer. As a first-generation college graduate and law student, I face real financial challenges, and your generosity helped me support myself and took an opportunity that many students like me cannot afford. Experiences like this can shape careers and inspire a lifelong commitment to public service. I am truly grateful.
Interning at the Erie County DA's office changed how I see justice and strengthened my commitment to helping others. Because of your generosity, I could focus on learning and growing without worrying about money. Your support gives students like me a chance to make a difference. Thank you for believing in first-generation students and for helping to create a more inclusive world. Your impact will stay with me throughout my career and beyond.
