How would you describe your experience?
My summer at the Legal Aid Society of Rochester was incredibly meaningful and eye-opening. As a rising 2L, I wasn't expecting to have so much direct client interaction, but I found myself working closely with elderly clients who were seeking divorces and orders of protection. These clients were often in very emotional and difficult situations, and providing guidance to them in a time of need was extremely fulfilling. Beyond the courtroom, I spent a lot of time drafting motions, doing legal research, and helping with trial prep. These tasks really helped me build practical skills and gave me confidence in my ability to think on my feet and offer real legal advice. More than anything, this summer showed me the importance of compassionate, client-centered work, and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in public interest law.
Working at the Legal Aid Society was both inspiring and formative. I was surrounded by passionate, dedicated attorneys who model what it means to be a compassionate and effective advocate. Under their guidance, I had the chance to represent clients in court, help them navigate urgent legal issues, and witness firsthand the impact of strong legal advocacy.
What impacted you the most?
One of the most impactful parts of the summer was getting the opportunity to represent clients in court under attorney supervision. Standing in front of a judge, advocating on behalf of a real person whose safety and well-being depended on the outcome was an experience I'll never forget.
In one case, I helped a client obtain an order of protection against their abuser. From meeting with the client, to finally standing beside them in court and making the argument-it was intense, fast-paced, and deeply personal. I had to think on my feet, stay calm under pressure, and be both empathetic and assertive. When the judge granted the order, I felt a powerful sense of purpose and pride, knowing that my work had made a tangible difference in someone's life.
