How would you describe your experience?

My experience this summer was incredibly rewarding. My judicial internship at the Eastern District of New York gave me a behind-the-scenes perspective on the workings of the federal court system. In my position, I researched complex legal issues and drafted memorandums and recommendations for the judge, observed settlement conferences, and sat in on trials. I also witnessed arraignments and naturalization ceremonies. These experiences gave me a deeper appreciation for the power and gravity of the justice system. My role has been fulfilling, as I feel that I am positively impacting New York City's broader community. Additionally, I've had the privilege of meeting and learning from many talented and inspiring judges, clerks, and attorneys.

Outside the courthouse, living in Brooklyn has positively added to my experience. New York's fast-paced and high-energy environment has pushed me to stay focused and driven. I love the balance of challenge and excitement that the city offers. My experience this summer has strengthened my professional goals and reaffirmed my passion for public service!

What impacted you the most?

One of the most impactful moments from my judicial internship was witnessing a naturalization ceremony. During these ceremonies, immigrants from all over the world take an oath of allegiance and officially become citizens of the United States. At the Eastern District of New York, each new citizen is given an American flag to commemorate the occasion. It was incredibly inspiring to see the pride and joy on everyone's faces as they held their flags, took photos with their families, and celebrated their milestone. Witnessing the ceremony was a reminder of the court's profound role in shaping the community, and it is a moment I will remember as I grow in my career.

Another experience that had a significant impact on me was observing the Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) prosecute a federal criminal case. During the trial, I watched the AUSAs present evidence, examine witnesses, make opening and closing statements, and guide the jury through a complex and sensitive case. I was inspired by the level of preparation, professionalism, and commitment they brought into the courtroom every day. This experience was inspiring because the trial showed how the AUSAs' efforts directly served the interest of justice and provided a voice for a victim of a serious crime.

What would you like to share with our donors?

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the donors of the Jonathan Malamud '82 and Tomi Hanai Fellowship. My biggest goal has been to live and work in New York City, and through the support of this fellowship I was able to fully immerse myself in my role at the Eastern District of New York without worrying about the financial strain that came with the opportunity. I am deeply thankful for your generosity in helping me make my goal a reality!
