Monique Emdin's brothers Josiah Emdin and Jonathan Emdin present the 2022 Emdin Award to recipient Shakierah Smith '22.

Monique E. Emdin Award

Monique Emdin was a Summer Associate in Barclay Damon LLP’s 2006 class (formerly known as “Hiscock & Barclay LLP”) who joined the Firm full time in September 2007 as an Associate attorney. Tragically, however, soon after graduating from University at Buffalo School of Law, Monique was diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer, underwent surgery and chemotherapy, and despite battling hard and maintaining a positive attitude, passed on March 8, 2008.

Monique was a wonderfully gifted young person who had a “sky’s-the-limit” future. Shortly after Monique’s passing, Barclay Damon, LLP, in conjunction with the University at Buffalo School of Law and Monique’s church, the Bethesda World Harvest International Church, developed a fitting tribute of an annual award in Monique’s name to be given to a graduating UB School of Law student who best exemplifies Monique’s attributes and community spirit.

The “Monique E. Emdin Memorial Award” is given annually at the Students of Color Dinner to a graduating senior at the University at Buffalo School of Law who is a member of groups traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession, demonstrates a commitment to community service, including significant service in faith-based communities, and/or have made significant contributions to the University at Buffalo School of Law through involvement in student groups.
