At the University at Buffalo School of Law, we want to set you up for success in any way possible, and helping you decide on your degree path is no exception. Choosing a concentration for your J.D. program is a very big decision, let us help you make it by providing you with as much information as possible.

Concentrations

Maybe you’ve always felt a moral obligation to do what is right and just, or maybe you’ve been inspired by two decades of Law & Order - either way, you know that Criminal Law is the field you’d like to specialize in. At the UB School of Law, you can make that dream a reality. Between lectures, seminars, and other experiential learning, you will gain a wealth of both practical and theoretical knowledge on Criminal Law in the modern age.

Did you know that the UB School of Law is only two hours south of Toronto, CA? With such a close proximity to the northern border, we have taken the opportunity to utilize this to the best of our ability. With the Cross-Border Legal Studies concentration, you can learn a variety of information about international legal issues, ranging from business to immigration.

Family Law is an immensely important field of legal study, as it protects some of the most vulnerable individuals in their times of need. Students who choose a concentration in Family Law will engage in three main courses (Family Law, Domestic Violence Law, and Children and the Law), in addition to experiential learning, and a major writing project. Through these avenues, you could become a specialist in the area of Family Law.

As the Digital Age progresses forward each day, so does the need for regulations of such a prominent field. Technology is constantly changing and becoming more complex, so the Intellectual Property and Privacy concentration exists to prepare students for the legal ramifications technology can cause, ranging from copyright and trademarks to the world wide web. As technology evolves, so must the laws around it, so if this interests you - Intellectual Property and Privacy Law might be the concentration for you!

If a career in public or private International Law interests you, consider choosing the International Law concentration as your legal specialization. Much like Cross-Border Legal Studies, the International Law concentration focuses on the legal systems of different foreign countries. This specialization offers the opportunity for travel to provide students with a more hands-on understanding of other countries’ legal systems and procedures.
