Goldberg was born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. His father was a twin son of a lawyer. He came from a poor background and was an adjudicated juvenile delinquent. But Goldberg wanted to be a lawyer and his family encouraged him to become an “esq.” He attended SUNY Stony Brook for undergraduate school, then earned his UB law school tuition by deferring his admission and working as a buyer for Abraham and Strauss.
Goldberg felt “blessed” by his UB law school experience. Professor Howard Mann was his favorite person. Mann taught his Constitutional Law class, became his mentor, and found him a clerkship that paid him enough to stay in law school.
He met his partner Tom Segalla while on the Buffalo Law Review. They then became associates at the Buffalo law firm Saperston & Day, where they worked for 27 years. They later started their law firm together. “We’ve been together ever since.”
His greatest professional achievement, he said, has been collaborating with Tom Segalla for 45 years and building one of the most dynamic law firms in the county.
Goldberg’s advice to law students: Treat law as a career and not a job. Invest in yourself. “Only you can make yourself great.” Do not waste a single day of your life.
