Cap and Gown (Academic Regalia)

A graduate in a blue cap and gown shakes hands with an academic official in ceremonial robes on a stage during commencement. Flags stand in the background, and floral arrangements line the front of the stage.

The University requires all graduates wear the authorized University at Buffalo School of Law academic regalia.

Caps and gowns can be purchase online from Jostens from now through April 8th. There is a $20 late fee from March 9th – April 8th.  After April 8th, you must purchase your regalia at the University Bookstore. In-stock merchandise is not guaranteed.

Students graduating in two majors may purchase an additional tassel for the second major at the University Bookstore or you may be able to order it online.

Additional information about placing your order, including pricing and a specific timeline, can be found on UB’s Caps and Gowns.

Latin Honors

To qualify for Latin honors, students must present a minimum of 60 credit hours of UB undergraduate coursework, at least 54 of which must be graded credits (i.e., not pass, no pass, satisfactory or unsatisfactory [grades of ‘P,’ ‘NP,’ ‘S’ or ‘U’]).

The UB GPA on record will be used for the determination of Latin Honors, no additional rounding will occur.

  • 3.200 cum laude
  • 3.500 magna cum laude
  • 3.750 summa cum laude

Students achieving Latin Honors will qualify to wear gold cords at Commencement. The UB Registrar will give the Undergraduate Advisors for the Law BA the list of Latin Honors. The School of Law will purchase the gold cords for our graduates and they will be available from Melinda Saran, Vice Dean for Undergraduate Student Affairs in 422 O’Brian in mid-April.
