Alternative Dispute Resolution includes a variety of methods for resolving disputes outside of traditional courtroom litigation, such as through mediation or arbitration.
The law school offers both classroom instruction as well as practical training in these areas. After taking a course on Mediation Theory and Practice, students may participate in our Mediation Clinic where they work on cases referred by local courts or other mediation agencies. Clinic participants progress from simulations and recorded role-playing exercises to serving as volunteer mediators for small-claims cases in local town courts.
Students can also sharpen mediation and negotiation skills through real-world competitions that build critical thinking and collaboration. The law school hosts an annual Representation in Mediation Competition. The top three teams from this intramural competition have the opportunity to represent UB School of Law at national and international competitions including the ABA (American Bar Association) Regionals, the New York State Bar Association NYC Mediation & Negotiation Competition, and the IBA-VIAC Mediation & Negotiation Competition in Vienna, Austria.
