Requirements for UB Law CLE Programs

Offering CLE Credits to New York State Attorneys

If you are affiliated with the School of Law and are planning to hold a CLE, you must follow these requirements.

If you have any questions, please contact:

Lisa M. Mueller, CLE Coordinator
University at Buffalo School of Law
414 O’Brian Hall, Buffalo, N.Y. 14260
716-645-3176 or lmueller@buffalo.edu

1. You must provide attendees with written materials that cite authority to support the presentation (they must be comprised of more than a simple outline of the presentation);

2. Verify attendance (sign-in sheet at door for live events; online attorney affirmation form for others);

3. Distribute evaluations to attendees at the end of the program;

4. Any brochure, advertisement or announcement (written or electronic) that promotes the event as a CLE program must contain the following statement (it does not have to be in a large font, and it does not have to be in an overly obvious area):

"The University at Buffalo School of Law has been certified by the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board as an Accredited Provider of continuing legal education in the State of New York for the period of March 11, 2026 - March 10, 2029.  The law school has a financial hardship policy. For further information on our policy, contact Lisa Mueller, CLE Coordinator at (716) 645-3176."

Note: If you are not charging a fee to attend, you do not need the last two sentences of the paragraph above regarding a financial hardship policy.

5. Fees may only be charged to cover administrative expenses;

6. In a clearly visible location on any advertisement, you must list the amount of credit available for the program and the areas the credit covers (i.e.; "This program qualifies for 3.0 credits in the area of Professional Practice, .5 credits in the area of Ethics, and 1.0 credit in the area of Skills").  You must also list whether the program qualifies for transitional credit (i.e.; is appropriate for newly admitted attorneys);

7. After the program, please supply my office with copies of all of the above, as well as a timed agenda setting out the topics and speakers, and bios for each speaker. We require these documents for the law school’s end-of-the year report to the N.Y. State CLE Board;

8. Upon receipt of the copies referred to in item #7 above, we will issue CLE certificates to the program attendees.
