Building toward justice in rural counties

Ensuring access to justice in New York’s rural counties is a daunting challenge, with only 4 percent of the state’s lawyers serving an area where nearly one-fifth of the population lives.  The shortage leaves rural communities with too few assigned counsel and limited specialists in critical practice areas. In response, the law school, in conjunction with the state’s Office of Court Administration, has launched the UB Law Rural Justice Initiative, led by Vice Dean Bernadette Gargano and Hon. Michael Mohun ’80, to show law students the opportunities and rewards of rural practice. [Read the Article]
