Experiential Legal Education Application for International Students

Globe on blue background.

As an international student, you are required to receive approval for Curricular Practical Training ("CPT") before you work in a clinic, practicum, or externship. If you do not receive CPT, you will not be able to register for a clinic, practicum, or externship.

CPT International Student Services ("ISS") will deny late applications. Visit International Student Services for deadlines and more information.

Application Process for International Students

The following steps must be followed in order to participate in a clinic, practicum, or externship. This guide only provides information needed for the Law School; any specific questions regarding your CPT application should be directed to International Student Services.

  1. Submit an Application to a Clinic, Practicum, and/or Externship
    • Go to the Clinical Legal Education Application webpage and fill out an application for the clinic, practicum, and/or externship of your choice.
    • Be sure to answer if you have dual citizenship or are a citizen of another country, and indicate what type of visa you have.
  2. Receive an Offer
    • After your application is reviewed, you will receive an email from law-clinic@buffalo.edu notifying you whether you were accepted.
    • However, you will not be able to participate if you do not receive a CPT Acceptance.
    • We will register you for the course after we receive the notice that your application for CPT has been approved.
  3. Receive CPT Letter
    • Within a week of receiving your conditional offer, you will receive a CPT letter that is signed by Jordyn Wysocki, Assistant Managing Director of the Clinical Legal Education Program.
    • Please use law-clinic@buffalo.edu if you need to get in contact with Clinic staff and/or are asked for an email from staff/advisor in your application.
  4. Apply on UB Global
    • Once you receive your CPT letter, submit the CPT Request e-form on UB Global.
    • Ensure that you submit the application before the deadline, as any applications received after the deadline will be denied by UB Global.
    • Answer all the questions in detail and check that all dates are correct for the CPT semester.
  5. Receive Acceptance/Declination
    • International Student Services will notify you whether your request for CPT is approved and email you when your I-20 is ready to download from UB Global.
  6. Notify Clinic Staff
    • If your CPT is approved, forward the email to law-clinic@buffalo.edu, and the Clinic Staff will register you for your clinic or practicum.
    • If you receive a declination, send us an email to law-clinic@buffalo.edu to let us know, and we will release the clinic spot.
