The New York Bar - Applying and Admission

If you have applied for the New York State Bar Examination, you will receive an email with a barcoded Law School Certificate and Specimen of Applicant's Handwriting.  Our office can assist with submitting the bar forms below.

Applying for the New York Bar

Law School Certificate (Certificate of Attendance)

The New York State Board of Law Examiners will email a copy of your Law School Certificate (also known as Certificate of Attendance) directly to our office.  You do not need to bring the form to us; we will certify and submit the form automatically once we have received all outstanding grades.

Specimen of Applicant's Handwriting

Completed at Records & Registration - Once you receive an email with a barcoded handwriting form, bring the blank form to our office.  Once you arrive you will be asked to write the sample paragraph located on the form.  We will collect your form, once it is completed and signed, and will submit it to the NYS Board of Law Examiners.

Completed at Notary Public - You may also complete your handwriting sample in front of a Notary Public.  You must simply take the blank form to a Notary Public and once completed mail the handwriting sample to the NYS Board of Law Examiners.  You may mail the form to the address on the form.

Admission to the New York State Bar

Once you have taken or passed the bar examination, you must apply to be admitted to the bar.  Please visit the Admission Information the NY Board of Law Examiners provides to obtain the information on bar admission.

Form Law School Certificate

You will need to submit the Form Law School Certificate.  We will verify the information needed on the form and will forward to the Appellate Division department that is checked off on the form.  Each department has dates they will accept the form; visit their Appellate Division department website for further information.

Compliance with Skills Competency and Professional Values Requirement

Students who began law school July 1, 2016 or later are required to verify they have completed the Skills Competency and Professional Values requirement (Pathways).  This form should be submitted to our office, along with the Form Law School Certificate as both are required for admission to practice in New York State.  Applicants should fill out page 1 and select Pathway 1 as satisfying the requirement. If you began law school prior to July 1, 2016 then you are NOT required to submit the Skills Competency form.
