Buffalo Public Interest Law Program (BPILP)
Organization: New York State Unified Court System
My experience as an intern with Judge Ottaviano was very illuminating. Each day I was given the opportunity to observe court proceedings and speak with Judge Ottaviano about cases. This internship allowed me to put the cases that I studied during my 1L year into perspective and understand how a court proceeding actually works. It was interesting to learn more about criminal law and explore new possibilities when learning from Judge Ottaviano's law clerks. I was able to meet many different court staff and learn trial procedure.
On a daily basis I was impacted by the Judge's commitment to justice. When making decisions, Judge Ottaviano not only followed the law, but also considered the lasting impacts of his decisions. I was able to speak with Judge Ottaviano and his law clerks about what factors into decisions and how decisions are drafted. I believe that this experience will allow me to be a better trial attorney going forward and truly opened my eyes to government work.
I would like to thank the BPILP donors for their support. Your support has allowed me to work in such a welcoming environment and learn more about trial procedure than I could have imagined. As a 1L, I feel far more prepared going into the Fall semester thanks to my internships with Judge Ottaviano this summer.
