Jonathan Malamud '82 and Tomi Hanai Fellowship
Organization: Hon. Kathy J. King, New York State Supreme Court Civil Term
I began this experience with high expectations and a deep desire to learn. The first few weeks involved assisting the judge with a complex trial. My responsibilities included researching cases to support the judge's decisions and analyzing medical testimony to determine which party's argument was accurate. After the trial, I had the opportunity to ask the attorneys on both sides about their strategies.
I observed a group of very experienced attorneys present their cases before the judge, which was incredibly impactful. My experience continued with briefing and writing decisions for the judge, significantly improving my research and writing skills. Throughout my internship, I attended various trials held in the same courthouse. I also had the chance to visit Criminal Court in Brooklyn and learn from different Judges. During my last few days, I visited federal courts and observed how federal judges in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) conduct their cases. This experience allowed me to compare state and federal court procedures and interact with federal clerks, providing a broader perspective on the judicial process.
I was most impacted by the opportunity to work closely and hands-on with the Judge. Seeing how she dealt with cases and being able to ask questions about my briefs and decisions gave me the confidence and ability to improve my writing and research skills.
The trial I observed during my first week was also one of the most impactful experiences this summer. I watched experienced attorneys conduct a complex medical malpractice trial. Seeing these seasoned lawyers perform cross-examinations of medical experts and deliver opening and closing statements inspired me with a great desire to learn more. This experience motivated me to further develop my own advocacy skills and deepened my commitment to pursuing a career in litigation.
I wanted to extend my sincere gratitude to Jonathan Malamud and Tomi Hanai for their generous contribution. Interning in New York City was expensive, and their support significantly alleviated the financial burden. As a result, I was able to fully engage in and enjoy various activities in the city, making my internship experience more meaningful and enriching.
