How would you describe your experience?

My experience this summer at the Criminal Justice Advocacy Clinic has been incredible. I was able to see many projects through that I started last semester with the clinic and help out with many other cases that I wouldn't have had the chance to work on otherwise. I’ve gotten to work on diverse projects, such as drafting an affirmation for a DVSJA application, working on clemency supplements, gathering evidence to investigate cases for new clients, and observing a DVSJA resentencing hearing. I was also able to help connect prospective clients with resources outside of the clinic. There is always so much valuable work to be done for the clinic and it feels amazing to be able to commit so much time to it. I've learned so much and find the work I'm doing very fulfilling.

What impacted you the most?

I am so happy for the opportunity to grow as a legal professional and as an advocate for clients. I value the learning experiences I get to have working under the direction of Director Ali Harrington and  Staff Attorney Annabel Mirales, who have so much knowledge and passion to share with their students, and I also value so greatly the experiences I get to have advocating for clients and working on their cases.

Being able to learn from them firsthand how to be a truly zealous advocate for your client is something I will carry with me through my entire career. It's also been extremely impactful to visit and speak with clients and hear how grateful and appreciative they are for the work we're doing for them. Post-sentencing advocacy feels like an uphill battle sometimes, but knowing that you're making such a difference to your clients makes it so worth it.

What would you like to share with our donors?

I'm indescribably grateful for the opportunity to receive a fellowship and commit so many hours this summer to public service, particularly criminal justice advocacy. I am extremely passionate about the work we're doing at the clinic and I wouldn't have been able to do public service work like this over the summer if it weren't for the fellowship I received. I am so so so thankful! This opportunity has solidified my commitment to public service legal work and criminal justice advocacy.
