Jessica Ortiz '05 Federal Judicial Fellowship
Organization: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit - Civil Appeals Mediation Program
During my time with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit's Civil Appellate Mediation Program (CAMP), I conducted extensive legal research to support mediation efforts and assisted in resolving complex legal issues. I facilitated appellate mediation sessions, analyzed mediation memoranda, and collaborated with mediators to brainstorm solutions for challenging cases. Additionally, I contributed to promoting legal education access through the Justice for All Center and participated in a documentary project commemorating CAMP's 50th anniversary, aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of mediation in our legal system. These experiences reinforced my dedication to advancing justice and mediation effectiveness within the Second Circuit.
I learned firsthand the critical importance of being a diligent legal practitioner. The work I engaged in was not just about resolving individual cases, but about understanding that each decision and action had the potential to impact real lives and create precedents that could last indefinitely. This realization profoundly influenced my approach to the legal profession and deepened my commitment to excellence and responsibility in my practice.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Jessica Ortiz for your generous funding, which has been pivotal in my professional growth. Without your support, I would not have been able to live in New York City this summer and learn from the most significant federal appellate court in the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. This experience has been invaluable, providing me with insights and opportunities that will shape my legal career for years to come. Being invited into the federal court to practice is a rare and prestigious opportunity, one that even many long-time attorneys do not get to experience. I am deeply honored to have had this chance at the very beginning of my legal journey. Thank you for making this possible. Your support has not only impacted my career but has also contributed to the advancement of justice through mediation. I am profoundly grateful for your investment in my future and the future of our legal system.
